Najuna Joab, Magala Muhammed

Abstract

The study examined the effect of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on organizational development in Uganda, focusing on Total Energies Kampala. The research was conducted between March and August 2024, employing a case study design with a sample of 185 respondents comprising employees, management staff, community members, and CSR beneficiaries. Data was collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The results revealed that CSR had a significant positive effect on organizational development (R²=0.684, p<0.01). Specifically, environmental responsibility (β=0.312, p<0.01), philanthropic responsibility (β=0.289, p<0.01), ethical responsibility (β=0.325, p<0.01), and economic responsibility (β=0.298, p<0.01) all significantly predicted organizational development outcomes. The study found that CSR initiatives enhanced corporate reputation (Mean=4.12), improved employee morale and productivity (Mean=3.98), strengthened stakeholder relationships (Mean=4.05), and contributed to sustainable competitive advantage (Mean=3.87). The study concluded that strategic CSR implementation was instrumental in driving organizational development through enhanced brand equity, employee engagement, community goodwill, and operational excellence. However, challenges including limited stakeholder engagement in CSR planning, inadequate impact assessment mechanisms, and insufficient integration of CSR into core business strategy constrained the full potential of CSR initiatives. The study recommended that Total Energies Kampala should adopt a more strategic approach to CSR by aligning initiatives with business objectives, enhancing stakeholder participation, establishing robust monitoring and evaluation frameworks, and integrating CSR principles across all organizational functions to maximize developmental impact.
