SCADA projects
This study examined the mediation effect of knowledge resources in the relationship between project complexity management and project performance in SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), Yaka (prepaid water meter systems), and AMR (Automatic Meter Reading) projects. Using a quantitative research design, data were collected from 247 project managers and team members across 82 completed projects in the utility sector. Structural equation modeling revealed that knowledge resources significantly mediated the relationship between project complexity management and project performance (β = 0.428, p < 0.001). The findings demonstrated that project complexity management had a direct positive effect on project performance (β = 0.362, p < 0.001) and on knowledge resources (β = 0.517, p < 0.001). Knowledge resources positively influenced project performance (β = 0.428, p < 0.001). The indirect effect through knowledge resources was statistically significant (β = 0.221, p < 0.001), indicating partial mediation. The model explained 67.3% of the variance in project performance. Knowledge resources served as a critical mechanism through which project complexity management influenced project performance in technical utility projects. Organizations that effectively managed project complexity through structured approaches were better positioned to develop, capture, and utilize knowledge resources, which subsequently enhanced project outcomes in terms of schedule adherence, budget compliance, quality standards, and stakeholder satisfaction. Project managers should prioritize the establishment of knowledge management systems alongside complexity management frameworks. Organizations implementing SCADA, Yaka, and AMR projects should invest in knowledge repositories, facilitate cross-functional learning, and create communities of practice to maximize the benefits of complexity management initiatives.

The study investigated the relationship between computer skills and tax compliance among small business taxpayers in Kampala, Uganda. The research employed a descriptive cross-sectional survey design with a sample of 120 small business owners and operators registered with the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA). Data was collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Results revealed a significant positive correlation (r = 0.687, p < 0.01) between computer skills levels and tax compliance rates among small business taxpayers. The findings indicated that taxpayers with advanced computer skills demonstrated 42% higher tax filing accuracy, 38% better record-keeping practices, and 45% greater utilization of electronic tax systems compared to those with limited computer proficiency. Regression analysis showed that computer skills accounted for 47.2% of the variance in tax compliance behavior. The study concluded that computer skills significantly enhanced tax compliance through improved record-keeping, easier access to online tax platforms, better understanding of digital tax requirements, and increased efficiency in tax preparation and filing. It was recommended that the Uganda Revenue Authority should implement comprehensive digital literacy programs for small business taxpayers, simplify the electronic tax filing interface, provide free computer training workshops, establish taxpayer assistance centers equipped with IT support, and develop mobile-friendly tax applications to accommodate varying levels of computer proficiency. The study also recommended that business development organizations should integrate tax compliance modules into their entrepreneurship training programs.

The Relationship Between Domestic Violence and Students’ Academic Performance in Secondary Schools in Kasaana Subcounty Sheema District
domestic violence
academic performance
physical abuse
psychological abuse
inter-parental
This study investigated the relationship between domestic violence and academic performance among secondary school students in Kasaana Sub-County, Uganda. Specifically, it examined the impact of three dimensions of domestic violence: physical abuse, psychological/emotional abuse, and exposure to inter-parental violence. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research found strong negative correlations between each dimension of domestic violence and academic performance indicators, with psychological abuse showing the strongest negative link (r = -0.791). A regression model indicated that these three factors together explained 68.7% of the variance in diminished academic performance, confirming their substantial combined influence. All results were statistically significant (p<0.001), leading to the rejection of the null hypotheses. The study concludes that domestic violence in its various forms is a critical, detrimental factor to students' academic outcomes. Students exposed to violence at home demonstrated poorer results in national exams, lower school attendance, reduced concentration, and higher dropout rates. It recommends that schools establish psychosocial support systems, implement sensitization programs for parents and communities, and train teachers to identify and support affected students to mitigate the impact of domestic violence on learning.

The Relationship Between Effective School Management and Academic Excellence in Selected Private Secondary Schools in Kasaana Sub-County Sheema District
effective school management
academic excellence
resource allocation
leadership styles
This study investigated how effective school management relates to academic excellence in private secondary schools in Kasaana Sub-County, Uganda. Specifically, it examined the impact of three management practices: strategic resource allocation, adaptive leadership styles, and proactive stakeholder engagement. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research found strong positive correlations between each management dimension and academic performance, with leadership showing the strongest link (r up to 0.815). A regression model indicated that these three factors together explained 74.3% of the variance in academic excellence, confirming their substantial combined influence. All results were statistically significant (p<0.001), leading to the rejection of the null hypotheses. The study concludes that effective school management, built on these three pillars, is crucial for enhancing academic outcomes. Schools that practice transparent budgeting, empowering leadership, and genuine community collaboration achieve better results in national exams, student progression, and critical thinking. It recommends that schools institutionalize transparent budgets, invest in leadership development, and create strong platforms for stakeholder involvement to sustain high academic standards.

TikTok’s Algorithmic Influence on News Dissemination: A Local Perspective in Uganda

In the heart of Kampala, Uganda, a fascinating investigation delved into the intricacies of how TikTok's algorithm shapes the way news is shared and consumed among residents of Kibuli Parish. The core aim of this research was to unravel the complex dynamics of how the platform's algorithmic framework affects the visibility, variety, and consumption habits of news-related content, with a specific focus on the emergence of information silos. By adopting a multimodal research strategy, the study seamlessly integrated the quantitative examination of TikTok videos with in-depth, qualitative conversations with local TikTok enthusiasts. A carefully curated group of 40 active news consumers on the platform was selected using a targeted sampling approach, providing a rich tapestry of insights. The data collection process involved the use of rigorously designed questionnaires, interview and content analysis, which were subsequently analysed through a combination of statistical summaries and thematic deconstruction. The results revealed a dual-edged phenomenon: while TikTok's algorithm dramatically boosts the visibility and engagement of news stories, it also inadvertently creates pockets of like-minded individuals and reinforces pre-existing biases, thereby limiting the diversity of perspectives. Furthermore, the algorithm's propensity to prioritize sensational content facilitates the rapid dissemination of misinformation, often overshadowing locally relevant stories. Ultimately, the study concludes that although TikTok has revolutionized news dissemination in Kibuli, its underlying algorithmic architecture poses significant challenges, including diminished content diversity and heightened polarization. To address these concerns, the researchers propose a multifaceted approach, encompassing enhanced content regulation, the promotion of diverse and inclusive content, and increased transparency in algorithmic decision-making, with the ultimate goal of fostering a more responsible and nuanced news consumption culture among users.
